4 Tips to Creating Super Unique Engagement Photos
POV: You just got engaged, you’re excited to start planning your wedding but before you even start that you want to create a memory of this moment that will last a lifetime. You want to preserve that giddy feeling inside you, before you become a married couple, that says “AHHH I’M GETTING FRICKEN MARRIED.” And that is why Engagement photos are one of the most fun memories to capture.
In a time that everyone wants to stand out, how will you create memories that are truly unique to you? How will you capture the love that only you two share? Here are a few tips when planning your engagement shoot that can truly transform it into something special.
Choosing something that reflects your relationship - This can be super simple. What do you to love doing together or sharing together? Are you obsessed with board games? Or are you avid outdoors people who spend their weekends hiking? Or even more simple - is your favourite comfort food pizza? I remember seeing a photo recently of a photographer who just had a baby and because both her and her spouse loved photography, they styled their newborn shoot by placing their baby in a camera bag with all their lenses. It may sound weird, but it had to be one of the cutest things I’d seen and so unique to both parents. This is all really to say that it’s okay to be a little different and incorporate something that tells a little more of a story, your story, through these photos.
Find a location with meaning - Do you have a favourite coffee shop? Or where did you have your first date? USE THESE. Taking your engagement photos at a place that carries that much meaning in your relationship means that every time you look back at these photos, you’re filled with other important memories as well. And that’s what it’s all about - making memories last a lifetime.
Get creative with props - I love this one personally because it makes the photos so fricken fun and definitely in no way does it break the bank. Amazon has a TON of stuff that you can get to elevate your photos. From white lace bows to gloves, to heart shaped sunglasses. And this is not to say you need to use these for the entirety of the photoshoot, but it is a nice add to create some more fun, pinterest-vibey photos. Another great prop add is champagne. YEAH BABY, the champagne pop - this is just a great way to take some candid photos where it is virtually impossible not to smile and laugh in.
Trust your Photographer - Your photographer is there to support you in capturing memories that YOU want to see. Let them in on the planning phases, ask them for advise and tell them your story so they can make sure it’s exactly what you want to see. Photographers are also a great resource for understanding lighting and how it affects the photos you’re looking for so I would recommend trusting them in finding that perfect time of day to shoot in. ALSO - don’t be scared to share your inspo pictures with your photographer. Bust out that pinterest board and let them use that to create takeaways you want.
Your engagement shoot, although not the wedding, is still a grand memory to capture and in reading this I hope it helps make it that much more special. Get creative and be yourselves. This is your story we’re capturing.
